Programs & Events

Dreyer offers a variety of ongoing health education classes, support groups, and occasional seminars designed to help you keep yourself and your family healthy and well. There is a fee schedule for most classes, unless noted as "free," to help cover the costs associated with instructors and facilities. In many cases, however, these costs may be covered in whole or in part by your insurance.

 

 
 
  

Advance Directives

Offered free of  charge to all Dreyer patients, this informational seminar is presented at West Downer Place and gives an overview of the Living Will and Durable Power of Attorney advance directives - what they are, how they are different, and why these are important documents to have to communicate your end-of-life decisions to your health care team and loved  ones.  Call 630-859-6898 to register.

Freedom from Smoking ®

Don’t postpone quitting any longer.  Taught by a professional nurse certified by the American Lung Association, this program has a strong focus on the behavioral approach to quitting smoking and includes a step-by-step plan, self-control and stress management techniques, nutrition and exercise guidelines, group support, and follow-up.  Information about nicotine replacement therapy is also presented.  The class meets for eight two-hour sessions.  The fee of $25, payable at registration, is refunded to every participant that completes the course.  For more information and to register, call 630-859-6739. 


High Blood Pressure - the Silent Stalker

What does "blood pressure" and "high blood pressure" mean?  How do diet, medication, and lifestyle affect blood pressure?  Limited to the first 15 callers, this class meets at West Downer Place and covers these topics.  Blood pressure checks are performed prior to class, beginning at 8:30 a.m.  Call 630-859-6898 for more information and to register.
 

Living Well With Congestive Heart Failure

This program consists of three classes and meets at West Downer Place.  Useful tips for living with CHF are presented.  What is Congestive Heart Failure; Diet and CHF; and Activities of Daily Life/Keeping Your End of the Bargain are the covered topics.  Call 630-859-6898 for more information and to register.

 

Living Well With Diabetes

Diabetes Self-Management Education at Dreyer is a program recognized by the American Diabetes Association. It is a covered benefit for all Medicare patients with a referral from their physician. The program consists of a one-hour individual appointment and eight hours of group classes. During the individual appointment, educators will assess your learning needs and individualize your goals. During the group classes, they will work with you to help you meet your goals. Attendees who are diabetic will receive a free gift. The four classes include: Basic Disease Management, Medications, Blood Sugar Monitoring, and Foot Care and Sick Days. Cancer Support Group

This forum is designed for patients diagnosed with cancer and their extended family and friends so that patients and families may share their feelings regarding their illness with the purpose of offering each other support, information, and education. Facilitated by nurse specialists from the Dreyer Cancer Center, the group meets on the first and third Thursday of each month from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Dreyer's Mercy Campus, 1221 North Highland Avenue, Aurora. All cancer patients, family members, caregivers, and significant others are welcome to attend this free group.

Home Advantage Program

New mothers and their babies have the opportunity to receive home visits from a nurse on the first and third days after discharge from the hospital. The visiting nurse provides care and support to both mother and baby.

Parenting Class

Do you feel frustrated, angry, or overwhelmed with your kids’ tantrums, whining, problems in school, sibling rivalry, or noncompliance with chores? Attend this class for help with these and other problems. Each six-week session is designed to foster positive interaction between parents and child and covers such areas as communication, encouragement, misbehavior, discipline, and positive reinforcement.  The fee, which includes a book, is $80 per couple or $60 per individual.
